Citrus Iberia Torrevieja

Los Naufragos beach, TorreviejaTorrevieja is located in the Spanish region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Beautiful sandy beaches, Europe's biggest salt flats bursting with bird life, historic sites and a huge variety of Spanish and international restaurants.are just a very few of the reasons to book a holiday here.

The resort is just 35 kilometres south of Alicante's international airport, El Altet. Flights from London take about two and a half hours. The easy access to Torrevieja for foreign visitors and its wide range of facilities and attractions make this a popular year-round holiday destination.

Torrevieja as a town dates from the early 18th century when it was a fishing village built around one of the watchtowers that flanks the Costa Blanca coastline. This watchtower was called the "Old Tower" or la Torre Vieja, because of the bad condition that it was in, and this is where it took its name.

The town is famous for the two huge saltwater lagoons which surround it. These "Salterns of Torrevieja" are the second biggest in the world and certainly the largest in Europe. The lagoons have been designated as national parks and are an impressive sight, attracting more than 250 bird species including flamingoes. The flats have been used for salt production since Roman times and still provide salt for export worldwide.

In Roman times this area was well known for its outstanding port. The remains of the "embarcadero romano" (Roman Docks) can still be seen near the ancient watch tower of La Mata.

Torrevieja used to be the home port of the largest fleet of sailing boats in the Mediterranean and still boasts one of Spain's best yacht clubs, with berths for 1,500 boats. In fact the town provides first class facilities for lovers of all sports - there are golf clubs, a flying club, a variety of water sports, and the municipal stadium with an athletics track and covered courts for tennis and a variety of other sports.
Torrevieja boasts a wonderful promenade with a lively craft market and a huge number of bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours. It is also very popular with sand modelers.

The town has easy access to some of the best golf courses around. Villamartin (hosted the '94 Mediterranean Open), Las Ramblas, Quesada, Campoamor, and the newly built La Finca courses are all less than 15 minutes drive away. Further afield is the renowned La Manga Resort.

Torrevieja, like most important Spanish towns, has a number of Fiestas, with one being held most months of the year, when tourists mingle with the locals to party in the streets in true Spanish-style.
The world-famous Habanera festival for choral groups is held every August, when the population expands roughly tenfold, like many other towns along the Costa Blanca.

The Torrevieja area is famous for salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante and it’s impressive to see the huge salt mountains producing, annually, more than half a million tons.

The salt works started to be developed in the 18th century when large amounts of salt were discovered in the lagoon. Today, the salt works in Torrevieja are considered to be the most important in the world, after the Dead Sea.

The town's salt is exported to northern Europe, Canada, the United States and Western Africa and is used for a variety of purposes such as a dressing for salting meat and fish, in industries as a water softener, and in colder countries it is used on their icy roads and airport runways. In African countries it is used as a fridge, to conserve food and prevent it from dehydrating.

Torrevieja's biggest attraction is without doubt its seafront. The promenade, the marina, the fine, sandy beaches and numerous rocky coves provide something for everyone - the sports enthusiast, the sun worshipper, the people watcher and the nature lover.

Whether you're seeking nature and tranquility or fun and action you'll find it among Torrevieja's beaches, esplanades, parks, gardens and salt lakes.

The resort's sandy beaches are among the most popular of the entire Spanish coast. They consistently win the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and provide excellent services and facilities. With around 340 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 20 degrees, the beach is the place to be!

There are five main beaches in Torrevieja. At the northern end of the resort is the popular La Mata beach which offers fine sand and a full range of facilities - foot showers, volleyball nets, water sports etc.
La Mata is linked to Salaret point by a series of small, rocky coves (try to fit in a visit to the marvellous coves of El Mojón and Zorras) which in turn lead to two of the most popular and lively beaches - Locos and Cura, both of which have fine sand, calm waters, a full range of facilities and the benefit of a bustling seafront promenade.
To the south of the town you'll find another popular beach, Los Naufragos. 10 minutes further south, are the bars, restaurants and more beautiful beaches of the Orihuela Costa.

For walkers and lovers of nature Torrevieja offers stunning cliff walks, many natural beauty spots and of course the two huge natural salt water lakes, teeming with bird life.

The salt water lakes absorb water from the atmosphere and create a special microclimate which is widely regarded to be beneficial for sufferers of rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory problems. There are mud baths and various health treatments available locally - and you don't have to be unwell to benefit from them!
